Intriguing Head

I picked up this bisque head at an auction about a week ago. One of the staff there told me they didn't know what it is, but figured it was pretty old. A few days later I spoke to a woman at a trader's market event who told me she didn't recognize it or its maker, but guessed it was from about 1820 to 1840. Since the man is smoking a pipe, she suggested it might have been intended to hold tobacco.

It measures a little over 4 inches tall with his hat on, and was once painted more than is apparent now. I can't find a discernable mark, unless the smooth triangle with rounded corners impressed into the stained bottom is a makers mark and not a flaw. Unfortunately, I can't get a clear photo of the triangle. Any ideas? Can anyone confirm or contradict the guess on period and on purpose? Any thoughts on finding more info or on possible value?

Thanks for your input. Enjoy autumn and rummaging for treasures!

Thank you, Gwenyvere. That looks right, all right. Much better shape than mine. Isn't it amazing what using the right keywords in a search will do?

Thanks again.
